AFFORDABLE housing and land.

These are just two of the issues identified by an opposition candidate as critical to the people of St George South.

Dr Esther Byer-Suckoo, the Democratic Labour Party's candidate for that constituency in the next general elections, constitutionally due in 2008, highlighted a number of issues following a mass campaign exercise in that electoral district, yesterday.

Supported by a large group of party faithfuls, headed by party leader David Thompson, the prospective MP met residents and heard their concerns.

A medical practitioner by profession, Dr Byer-Suckoo lamented the poor conditions of many of the roads throughout the constituency and noted that the level of poverty was shocking and exposed the conditions under which some people lived.

"I'm looking to see who needs what, and am also in the process of forming alliances with those persons who can help.

"There are agencies that can help but people don't know that those things are available. They need to be pointed in the right direction. That is what has been missing: proper representation .

"Now that the people in St George South have me, they can come to me, tell me their concerns and I'll point them in the right direction," she promised.

A hometown girl, Dr Byer-Suckoo, who has been involved in community work in the constituency for a number of years, described as fantastic and overwhelming the response from people across the constituency. She pledged to provide them with proper representation.

She thanked the party's loyalists for the way they rallied around her yesterday.

Those on the campaign trail included former Prime Minister Sir Lloyd Sandiford, newcomer Stephen Lashley and stalwarts Cranston Browne, Owen Eversley, and former MP for the constituency Richard Byer.
