Jamaica creating home for fish
Published on: 10/6/08.
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico Jamaica's agriculture ministry is creating eight fish sanctuaries to help protect endangered species and boost a struggling industry.
Permanent secretary Donovan Stanberry says locals have been complaining about a depletion of resources.
He says the government also will offer US$690 000 in loans to fishermen struggling to make a living.
Those caught fishing inside the areas will face heavy fines.
Stanberry said in a statement issued Saturday that the government also is renovating 30 beaches popular with fishermen.
The US$1.4 million project include construction of storage facilities, vending areas and biodegradable disposal systems. (AP)
