Mia: Living in reign of terror
Published on: 11/19/08.
OPPOSITION LEADER Mia Mottley yesterday described the Democratic Labour Party's (DLP) ten-month tenure in Government as a "political reign of terror".
And she wants the David Thompson-led cabinet to show a "sense of urgency" by revealing to the public as soon as possible, how it plans to chart Barbados' way forward during the current economic crisis.
Speaking in the House of Assembly whilst debating the amendment of the Barbados International Business Promotion Corporation Act, Mottley charged that many Barbadians felt fearful of their future, and were concerned about the DLP's "modus operandi" in running the country.
She also chided the Government for not officially inviting the Opposition to its recent national consultations on how the country could survive the global economic crisis.
"Barbadians want to know what emergency plans are being put in place during these times," the Opposition Leader told the Lower Chamber.
The MP for St Michael North-East charged that in their short time in office, the new administration had replaced or removed a number of Barbadians who had changed better-paid career paths, opting instead for public service, only to find themselves out of favour with the new Government.
Mottley said a number of agencies remain in limbo, citing the Barbados Industrial Development Corporation and the Barbados Tourism Authority as examples where CEOs were not in place.
According to Mottley, many plans the former Barbados Labour Party administration had put into place regarding International Business had increased finance in Barbados' coffers, but the new DLP administration had so far not shown how they would improve such an important sector. (BA)
