All's set for veteran jockeys' race at Garrison on Saturday
by TYRONE EVELYN
HORSE RACING has at last come in from the cold.
Come Saturday that discipline will be joining several others to recognise the older sportsmen and women who have served their respective sport with pride and distinction, with the staging of the first-ever veteran jockeys' race.
The race in question is called The Legends and Veterans Jockeys Condition, which is for the F3 and Lower animals going 1 100 metres.
Among the former top jockeys expected to be given a leg up in the saddle for the race are Venice "Pappy" Richards, Hugh Blades, Godfrey Griffith, and Eustace Joseph of Barbados, and Edmund DeFreitas of Trinidad and Tobago.
Other veteran jockeys expected to be seen out are Barbados' Neville Walcott, Darcy Ras Isley Small, Minkey King and Stephen Holder, and Trinidad's Bison Ramanoop and Trevor DeFreitas.
Small has been in the vanguard of organising the race with the Barbados Turf Club (BTC), which, in its race book last Saturday, appealed to sponsors to come forward and assist with sponsorship of the race which carries prize money totalling $20 000.
In its last race day promo, the club stated: "The BTC, in our ongoing efforts to improve the local horse racing industry, will be organising a unique event on Saturday, January 5.
"To help make this concept a reality we are seeking sponsorship which will assist with the staging of the event."
Eight races are on the day's card, and the remaining seven have been named after outstanding racing personalities.
Race 1 is The Edgar Crossley Condition; Race 2 the Norman Balgobin Condition; Race 3 The Challenor Jones Handicap; Race 4 The Sonia Perkins Condition; Race 5 The Harold "Smirkie" Blades Condition; Race 6 The Johnny Marcelle Condition; and Race 8 The Gilbert Yvonet Condition.
